The complete BK MIKRO system includes
- A scanner
- A control unit (with I/O extension module as option)
- A connection cable
The wand of the scanner inspects object positions or ranges potential-free according to the machine cycle. A micro-computer based control unit triggers the wand movement by an external signal or a signal from the PROFIBUS-Master (PLC). The scanning result is then compared to the nominal value in the control unit (by means of “teach-in” or programmed parameters) and passed on as “o.k.” or “k.o.” message via relay contacts (digital I/O) or via PROFIBUS to the machine control. Any deviation can trigger an instantaneous machine stop ensuring that the machine doesn't crash and also prevents bad parts from being manufactured.
From simple tool breakage monitoring in a single head machine to the control of a wide range of different tool lengths in the magazine of a machining center (including their correct storage) to the inspection of profiles with the highest scanning precision, BK MIKRO® offers all functions for checking production processes:
- Tool monitoring: breakage / presence / holding / detection
- All functions controlled by a one-chip microcomputer.
- O.K. or K.O. indication by LEDs enabling direct control of the test station.
- Intensity of wand is adjustable e.g. for sensitive drills with small diameters.
- Easy mounting of insulating material housing on profile rails according to DIN.

BK MIKRO systems are produced in accordance with ISO Standard 9001 and meet all internationally required safety standards. They all dispose of the CE sign and UL approval.
BK MIKRO9 integrates almost all features of the known BK MIKRO systems. It is usable for tool monitoring and object or free space monitoring purposes.

The BK MIKRO9 models are suitable for a great variety of monitoring tasks:
- Profibus
The monitoring is controlled by parameters (angle / tolerance, etc.) from the PROFIBUS master (PLC). In this case an unlimited number of tools can be scanned and the full functionality of the system is available.
Typical application BK MIKRO91 - Parameterization with Desktop Software and Digital I/Os
The parameterization of the tool / object data is performed on a PC and transmitted to the control unit via USB then actuated digitally (by the PLC) during the application. When connected to the I/0 extension module up to 512 objects / tools can be taught and monitored via the selection inputs. Depending on the control unit used a full (premium) or limited (basic) functionality is provided.

For easy setup without a PC the most important functions (clockwise / counter-clockwise rotation of the wand, object or free-space monitoring, adjustment of scanning intensity) can be set on the I/O extension module.

Further Features:
- Setting all parameters via PROFIBUS or configuration software.
- The number of the nominal values which have to be interrogated is unlimited (digital I/Os: 512 tools max.). A single control system is therefore also sufficient if a processing centre is, for example, extended by a further tool magazine.
- The angles measured by the scanner are transmitted to the control over PROFIBUS for evaluation. If the actual value differs from the nominal value, the production process is stopped by the control.
- Diagnostic features easy accessible with the desktop software.

Functional Principle Tool Monitoring
Depending on the preset parameters in the control unit when a start signal is given from the machine control the wand rotates left or right until it reaches the tool. In this process it first approaches the monitoring range with maximum speed, then decelerates and scans the tool with the set intensity. Once the wand contacts the tool or goes past the point where the tool should be (broken tool) the wand returns to home position at maximum speed and outputs either and OK or KO signal.
By means of a preset angle the wand can be assigned a freely definable home position between two tools to be monitored. After the wand has reached this position the two toos can be scanned. The order of the scanning direction is also selectable.
